Listening to your iPod on those very long trips can be a fantastic way to pass the time, until you run out of juice. The silence of a drained iPod can really ruin the rest of the trip so here are a few tips to make your iPod last considerably longer when you do not have charging facilities.

Firstly, make sure that you do not have anywhere to charge your iPod on trips. Most cars, trains, planes and even some buses will have some sort of power socket to recharge an iPod. All you will need is a compatible iPod mains charger.

If you find yourself in a situation where there are no power sockets from which you could recharge from, immediately check that you have made the following changes to your iPod.

If you are ever distracted by someone talking to you or any situation where you have to spend more than a minute away from listening to your iPod then turn it off or at least put it on hold or pause to stop the menu from engaging and wasting precious power. Please not that the older your iPod is the less charge it will hold as the battery degrades over time.

Before you leave home make sure that you update your iPods software, especially If you have one of the earlier Ipods as there have been countless software updates that increase battery power. All software updates are free to download of all iPod owners.

Switching off features such as Wi-Fi and the equalizer as well as switching off any third party applications can significantly reduce the power usage. Similarly, deselecting the “backlight always on” option will have a similar effect as less energy is needed to power the screen.

Finally, the more you use your menu the greater your power draw will be. So it is best to set up a good play list before you leave home and then just let it play. Avoid using the fast forward feature as this requires the hard drive to spin which can use a lot of power.

Following all of the above tips will significantly increase your battery life and wont leave you stranded without music ever again. Of course the best way to ensure that you never run out of juice is to buy a mains charger for your iPod.
